Nomenclature

Nomenclature

Nomenclature refers to naming of the various files and components used by Revit. Generally, you will find there are many examples in the Template and in the Library to reference for how elements should be named. Please take the time to be consistent with all the naming as it will ensure everyone working within Revit can find and use these elements without the need to waste time investigating to identify their purpose or use.

IMPORTANT:

  • Nomenclature that utilises ANZRS prefixes should not be renamed. These standards are used in Xrev Generic Content as well as Xrev produced Manufacturer content. So if they were renamed, using any of this content would result in the original names being recreated and thus ending up with duplicates.

Project File Naming

For Typical Project Files:

  • <Project Number>-<Client>-<Building/Site>-<Suffix>-<RevitVersion>.rvt

  • 00000-The Client-Administration Building-DD-2018.rvt

For an Archive File / Milestone Issue:

  • <Project Number>-<Client>-<Building/Site>-<Suffix>-<RevitVersion>-<Reason>-<yyMMdd>.rvt

  • 00000-The Client-Administration Building-DD-2018-Tender Issue-201127.rvt

INFO: The suffix should identify linked files, stages or options.  This can be omitted in simple projects.

Family Naming

Family Naming is to be compliant with the below structure:

<Functional Type>

-

<SubType>

-

<Manufacturer>

-

<Descriptor1>

.rfa

<Functional Type>

-

<SubType>

-

<Manufacturer>

-

<Descriptor1>

.rfa

Use a hyphen as the delineator.
Nested Components that are not to be placed independently to have a “X_” prefix

There may be additional Descriptors and may include Project Delineators. Below is a list of samples. As you can see, in some circumstances some fields can be left out, such as Manufacturer or Descriptor1 where they are providing no further clarification.
