How to Resolve Review Warnings
Ensuring your model is as clean as possible from Warnings and errors is critical to the overall stability and performance of the file. All Warnings effect the overall performance of almost every operation within Revit. During each action, Revit is checking the list of Warnings to see if any of them have been resolved. This article outlines all the common warnings and the methods to resolve them.
Access the command through Manage ► Inquiry ► Warnings.
This will open the Review Warnings dialog:
From here you can see the Warnings grouped by Warning Type. These can be expanded to view the instances that are reporting the Warning listed as:
<Category> : <Sub-Category> : <Type Name> : id <ElementID>
You can use the ElementID with the Manage ► Inquiry ► Select by ID command to find the problem elements in a 3D view with all elements visible and then isolate them.
Where there are many errors, it may be beneficial to use the Export… command to output a HTML file to work through the Warning list and resolve them. Below outlines recommendations on how to resolve many of the different types of Warnings you might receive.
Resolving Warnings
Use CTRL+F to search for a specific Warning
Highlighted walls are attached to, but miss, the highlighted targets.
Detach walls or adjust them so they do not miss their targets.
Highlighted elements are joined but do not intersect.
Unjoin elements that do not intersect, or adjust those elements so they intersect if that is the intention.
Conditions for wall embedding are no longer satisfied.
Select the Element by its ID and review in 3D. Unjoin it as required.
The highlighted column can't maintain attachment to the target. It will be treated as unattached until it can intersect.
Detach unconnected columns, or correct the element it needs to attach to so it does insect.
Design Option "Main Model" cannot reference Design Option "<Option Set Name> : <Option Name>".
Ensure all elements within a design option are self contained. For instance, you cannot attach or join elements from the main model to elements within a design option. They would all need to be part of the option to interact with each other.
Room Tag is outside of its Room. Enable Leader or move Room Tag within its Room.
This will result in floating question marks within your documentation confusing your readers and looking unprofessional. Ensure all links are loaded. If you’ve recently reloaded you may need to “jiggle” the model to have it refresh (move and move back). If its not caused by links, it is best practice to just delete these room tags and replace them if needed.
Multiple Rooms are in the same enclosed region. The correct area and perimeter will be assigned to one Room and the others will display "Redundant Room." You should separate the regions, delete the extra Rooms, or move them into different regions.
This will affect your Room schedules and is important to resolve. This could be a result of not having all the links loaded. Ensure any links containing Room bounding elements such as Walls, Columns, Floors, Ceilings, Roofs & Room separation lines are loaded. It is also important to review the vertical extents of the Rooms, to ensure they are in fact placed on the correct levels and their heights are set appropriately. If after checking all this, they are still redundant and are not required by external briefing software (dRofus/Codebook), you may remove them from your model by deleting them from Room Schedule, this ensures they are permanently deleted from the model as opposed to just becoming unplaced.
Could not create Wall Sweep. All the segments are of zero length.
Review the element in 3D. Use the Selection Box tool to identify where it is in the model. If it appears fine, consider deleting and replacing the sweep. You will have to ensure you replace any associated documentation such as Keynotes/Tags or dimensions.

Beam or Brace is slightly off axis and may cause inaccuracies.
Any slight off axis element can easily start to perpetuate itself across a model, as once you have one, other lines starting snapping to it. Monitor for these and resolve them ASAP. Exceptions to this might be property lines which must much reality and the bearing may actually be slightly off axis.
Curve-Based Family is slightly off axis and may cause inaccuracies.

Two elements were not automatically joined because one or both is not editable.
Consider whether these elements should be on the same Workset, and if so update the worksets appropriately to prevent this type of issue.
Highlighted room separation lines overlap. One of them may be ignored when Revit finds room boundaries. Delete one of the lines.
Ensure the elements do not overlap. Often Room Separation lines are added because the Room Calculation Height is not appropriate. It may help adjusting the Room Calculation Height for the level to account for minor slab steps which should not result in a new Room.
Highlighted room separation lines overlap. One of them may be ignored when Revit finds room boundaries. Delete one of the lines. You can tab-select one of the overlapping elements to exclude it from the group instance.
Ensure the elements do not overlap, especially within groups where the warning is perpetuated across many instances. Often Room Separation lines are added because the Room Calculation Height is not appropriate. It may help adjusting the Room Calculation Height for the level to account for minor slab steps which should not result in a new Room.
Some panels in this curtain system are slightly malformed. The problem is most likely ignorable. This problem usually occurs when a panel or parts of a panel have been divided so that they are very narrow. To better see the malformed panels, temporarily hide the mullion category and set display of lines to "thin lines" (using the command on the view menu).
As described in the warning, isolate the Curtain Wall/System, hide the Mullion Category and ensure thin lines are on. The problematic panels are typically at the end, bottom, top or where there are steps in the profile of the Curtain Wall/System. Remove any grids very close to the edges, or modify the profile sketch so it aligns with the grids at these edges.
There are identical instances in the same place. This will result in double counting in schedules.
Delete the duplicate elements, ensuring to retain the information with the most correct parameter data.
There are identical instances in the same place. This will result in double counting in schedules. You can tab-select one of the overlapping elements to exclude it from the group instance.
Ensure you do not have duplicate elements within groups. This is usually elements within a group, offsetting to another level to the main group and is caused by Revit not correctly perpetuating changes to groups. Avoid mixing system families such as walls/floors with loadable components (toilets, furniture, etc). Edit the group, and remove the offending elements from the group. You can replace them, but ensure elements are not hosted to other elements outside of the group.
Link "<FileName>.rvt" and the current model use different keynote tables. Keynote values from the link will not be displayed.
Ensure all internally produced models utilise the same Keynote file. Remap the Keynote files in Annotate ► Tag ► Keynote Settings.
Highlighted floors overlap.
These are normally not an issue (unless you are using calculated volumes in schedules). It is recommended to join any floors that are intended to overlap to produce clean sections without excess line work.
A wall and a room separation line overlap. One of them may be ignored when Revit finds room boundaries. Shorten or delete the room separation line to remove the overlap.
This will affect wall joins. Eliminate the overlap of room bounding elements.

This will affect wall joins. Eliminate the overlap of room bounding elements within the group by removing it from the group.
NEVER “exclude” elements from a group.
Highlighted walls overlap. One of them may be ignored when Revit finds room boundaries. Use Cut Geometry to embed one wall within the other or tab-select one of the grouped overlapping walls and exclude it from the group instance.
Amend the group so walls do not overlap, it is good practice to use disallow join on open ended walls within a group.
NEVER “exclude” elements from a group.
Highlighted walls overlap. One of them may be ignored when Revit finds room boundaries. Use Cut Geometry to embed one wall within the other.
Eliminate the overlapping walls by adjusting their extents (length/height). It may also be useful to use “Disallow Join” to remove any undesired joins, then use the Join Geometry tool to eliminate line work between coincident elements of the same material.
Insert conflicts with joined Wall.
Review to see if this is intended behaviour. Occasionally, due to material changes you can end up with 2 adjacent walls joining where a Door or Window is located. In this case, the warning can be ignored. If not, reposition the insert (door/window) so it does not interfere with the wall join.
The Mass contains geometry that cannot be combined. Mass Floors, volume, and surface area, won’t be computed.
Only solid geometry can be used for analytical purposes. Surface Geometry utilised for Façade systems and similar cannot. Review the Mass and delete the geometry if it is not being used. Otherwise, this error can be ignored.
Elements have duplicate "Mark" values.
Marks are instance parameters, and Revit prefers it if they are empty or unique values. If populated, use a schedule sorted by Mark and “Show all instances” to identify and update any Marks that are not unique.
Elements have duplicate Room "Number" values.
Duplicate Room numbers must be avoided as these can have flow on effects in the project and model lifecycle. Utilise a Room Schedule sorted by Room Number, with “Show all instances” selected to review Room’s with matching numbers and either re-number the duplicates or remove unrequired rooms.
Elements have duplicate "Type Mark" values.
Type Marks are Type parameters, and Revit prefers it if they are empty or unique values. If populated, use a schedule sorted by Type Mark and “Show all instances” to identify and update any Type Marks that are not unique.
Thickness of this Floor may be slightly inaccurate due to extreme Shape Editing. Dimensions to this element in sections and details may not accurately indicate the Thickness shown in Type Properties.
What Revit considers “extreme” is normally fine. This can typically be ignored, but review to see if it there are any errors in the point edit that could resolve the issue. For instance, it could be one of the points has reset to 0 and shouldn’t have.
Property lines do not form a closed loop. Area will not be computed.
Property lines do not always close perfectly, however if they are within a certain tolerance Revit will still consider them “closed”. If showing Easements, always input the entire boundary so it is a closed loop (which may mean that some boundaries overlap neighbouring boundaries).
Some columns in the project are excluded from the graphical column schedule view.
Sloped columns cannot appear in a graphical column schedule.
An elevation symbol references views on more than one sheet. It will show a blank sheet reference. To show the correct references, use a separate elevation symbol for the views on each sheet.
When another sheet needs to be referenced, utilise a separate elevation for each different reference. Each elevation on the same Room Elevation marker needs to reference same sheet. Alternatively, relocate the Elevations so they all appear on the same sheet.
Area is not in a properly enclosed region
For each Area Scheme, ensure all Areas are enclosed. Remove any unwanted Areas from the model by doing so within an Area Schedule assigned to the appropriate Area Scheme.
Room Volume is being calculated above the Upper Limit of this Room. Change the Upper Limit and Offset or change the height of volume calculations.
The upper limit should be beyond the Roof or Ceiling element that bounds it so it can calculate the full volume. Or if volume calculations are not required turn them off.
Room is not in a properly enclosed region
Below lists a number of potential solutions:
Verify that links are loaded as some Rooms may be relying on the loaded link having the “Room Bounding” property ticked and using Room bounding elements from that file.
Try adjusting the Room Calculation Height for the Level - particularly if you have steps in the slab and set downs. To do this, go to an elevation view, select the Level, and edit the Room Calculation Height parameter value. This will impact all Rooms hosted to this level.
Use Room Separation lines to bound rooms where walls are unable to.
Remove the Room if it is no longer required by going to a Room Schedule and deleting it there (deleting from the view will not remove the Room from the model it just becomes “unplaced”).
Room volumes overlap. Adjust the Upper Limit and Limit Offset properties of the Rooms.
This is best done in a section view with Rooms visible, so you can clearly see the height extents. Then as the warning states, adjust the upper limit and limit offset properties of the Room to eliminate the overlap.
Vertical Extensions on these Walls overlap. This can cause undesirable Joins. Try starting with no overlap and extend the Walls toward one another.
Review the wall and reset the vertical extensions back to 0, to avoid the overlap.
The Actual Tread Depth of stair is less than the Minimum Tread Depth specified in the stair type.
Ensure the minimum tread depth is as per applicable codes, then review the stair. Adjust the tread depth as required and then delete and redraw the stair run/s.
The Actual Riser Height of stair is greater than the Maximum Riser Height specified in the stair type.
Ensure the maximum riser height is as per applicable codes, then review the stair. Adjust the number of risers/treads to reduce the actual riser height.
Railings are placed completely outside the host. It may change the adjustment of the railing to the host and its vertical position.
This warning results in the railing not following its host, that is it will be horizontal. Review the Railing and ensure the sketch is located over the top of the host. Use Offsets within its properties (Rail and Balusters) if it side fixed.
The slope of this railing may not parallel the stairs at runs and landings. To get a parallel railing, split the railing sketch at the ends of landings.
As of more recent releases of Revit, if you are using the latest version of the Railings, sketches should not have to be split where there is a transition between horizontal and sloped hosts. However, this is best practice and you will notice when Revit creates an automatic Railing and edit the sketch it will be broken at Railings.
The rail is not continuous. Breaks in the rail usually occur at sharply-angled transitions.
Try the following:
Changing the transition style in the rail type properties,
Modifying the railing path at the transition.
Modify the Stair Path so the runs are offset by one tread at landings.
This cannot always be resolved with the Railing tool due to limitations of Revit.
Landing depth is less than run width.
The Run width should be maintained on the landings. Review the problematic landings and ensure their widths meet the minimum requirements.
Stair components are not continuously connected. This may cause incorrect representation and annotation.
Review the stair modelling. You may need to delete and re-draw the Runs. It’s good practice to let Revit create the Landings and then modify them to custom shapes as required afterwards. Avoid using Stair by Sketch.
Stair bottom end exceeds or cannot reach the base elevation of the stair. Add/remove risers at the bottom end by control or change the stair run's "Relative Base Height" parameter in the properties palette.
As stated, add/remove risers at the bottom using the controls (dots not the triangle grips). Ensure there are no incorrect height offsets applied due to incorrect editing methods for each of the runs.
Stair top end exceeds or cannot reach the top elevation of the stair. Add/remove risers at the top end by control or change the stair run's "Relative Top Height" parameter in the properties palette.
As stated, add/remove risers at the top using the controls (dots not the triangle grips). Ensure there are no incorrect height offsets applied due to incorrect editing methods for each of the runs.
