How to Open Resources from Other Projects

Whilst the Project Template tries to incorporate the needs of most Projects, there will always be elements you need that aren’t in the Template. This does not mean you need to create these items from scratch. The Library contains numerous items for easy loading into your project.

  • Preconfigured System Families

    • Ceilings

    • Floors

    • Railings

    • Roofs

    • Stairs

    • Walls

  • Preconfigured Materials

  • Standard Details

  • Kit of Parts Models

System Families

System Families are stored in Revit Project Files for use. To Load the System Families into your model,

INFO:

This is the best method, but requires a Paid application.

  1. With the Model you require the System Families in, Open the File that contains the System Family you require,

  2. On the Ribbon, Select JOTools ► Transfer ► Transfer Single,
    This is a Paid App and can be Purchased here.

  3. Select the From: Model at the top from the Dropdown list, and Check the To: Model at the bottom, then select any of the Types you want to copy.

  4. These Types will now be copied into your Model without any other Junk.

INFO:

This method brings in all elements of the selected Categories, as such you can end up with a lot of unwanted elements. As such its not recommended.

  1. With the Model you require the System Families in, Open the File that contains the System Family you require,

  2. On the Ribbon, Select Manage ► Settings ► Transfer Project Standards,

  3. Select the Copy from: file and Check the Category to Copy,

  4. Select OK to complete the Transfer.

INFO:

This method has the potential to bring in Level Types as System Families are typically hosted to a Level and a temporary Level is created in the process. So if the target file doesn’t already have the same Level Type, a new Type may be created in the process.

  1. With the Model you require the System Families in, Open the File that contains the System Family you require,

  2. In the Source File, go to a Floor Plan, Select the required System Family,

  3. Press Ctrl+C to Copy to Clipboard

  4. In the Target File, go to a Floor Plan, Paste the Required System Family with Ctrl+V. It doesn’t matter where.

  5. Delete the Pasted System Family as the Type now exists in our Project for Use.

Materials are stored in Revit Project Files for use. To Load the Materials into your model,

This method has the potential to bring in Level Types as Elements are typically hosted to a Level and a temporary Level is created in the process. So if the target file doesn’t already have the same Level Type, a new Type may be created in the process.

  1. With the Model you require the Material in, Open the File that contains the Material you require,

  2. In the Source File, go to a Floor Plan, Select the required Element that has the Material applied,

  3. Press Ctrl+C to Copy to Clipboard

  4. In the Target File, go to a Floor Plan, Paste the Required Material/Element with Ctrl+V. It doesn’t matter where.

  5. Delete the Pasted Element as the Material Type now exists in our Project for Use.

INFO:

  1. If you need to copy to a Family, select Build ► Component ► Model In-Place,

  2. Select Generic Models

  3. Set the Name as “Generic Models 1

  4. Create a Solid ► Extrusion

  5. Apply the Material you require to the Solid,

  6. Copy to Clipboard (Ctrl+C) the Solid from the Project and Paste into the Family (Ctrl+V),

  7. Delete the Solid in the Family (the Material is now available for use)

  8. Cancel the In-Place Family in the Project.

Standard Details

To re-use Standard Details from the Company Library;

Insert View from File
  1. Select Insert ► Load from Library ► Insert from File ► Insert Views from File

  2. Browse to the the File that contains the Standard Details/s and select Open,

  3. A dialog will open allowing you to Preview all Drafting Views, Schedules & Legends and Sheets that contain only 2D Information.

    1. Use the Filter at the top to choose the Type of Views you want,

    2. Select the View in the View List

    3. You will see a Preview in the Preview Pane which will hopefully help you identify which detail you are after.

  4. Select the Checkbox next to the View/s you want Load, then select OK.

INFO:

If you accidentally load the wrong detail, make sure you Undo the action to prevent unwanted information being loaded into the Project, then try the whole process again.

Kit of Parts

Kit of Parts models contain all/most of the elements you will require for a Project of a specific type. For instance, a Health Care, Education or Defence Project.

The project may contain;

  • System Families

  • Standard Details

  • Materials

  • Loadable Families

Follow the same steps as above to selectively Transfer/Copy or bulk transfer the required elements for your Project.
